Product description
Charred Timber Shadow Gap Cladding Board
Charred timber is the cladding that turns heads — a centuries-old Japanese technique applied to modern facades, with the kind of presence that ordinary cladding can’t match. Shou Sugi Ban is a deliberate scorching of the board’s surface — the controlled char creates a natural weather-resistant finish without any chemical preservatives, while the deep textured black gives facades a contemporary character that’s been turning architects’ heads for years. Stocked in our yard for delivery across Ireland.
Why Charred Timber?
Charred timber earns its place by combining heritage and performance. The charred surface seals the wood against insects, rot, and UV damage — naturally — and the finish is part of the timber itself, not a coating that flakes or peels. Service life is 30 years and beyond. Beyond the technical performance, Charred Timber gives projects an aesthetic that simply isn’t available with standard cladding: deep, matte, textured black with the character of grain showing through the burn. It’s the species architects specify when a building has to make a statement on day one.
Installation guidance
Charred Timber is straightforward to install for any competent contractor. Use stainless-steel A2 or A4 fixings outdoors and pre-drill near board ends to prevent splitting. The charred surface is robust but can flake at edges if struck during installation, so handle with reasonable care. When cutting boards on site, touch up exposed cut edges with a torch or a charred-edge sealer (we stock the right products) to maintain visual continuity. Some loose surface char may transfer in the first few weeks of installation; this settles quickly.
Finishing & maintenance
Charred Timber is a low-maintenance specification by design — the finish is the timber. No oiling, no staining, no annual treatment is required. For periodic cleaning, a soft brush or gentle wash is all that’s needed. If you want to preserve the deepest possible black tone over many years, a clear UV-protective sealer can be applied annually — we stock the right products if this matters for your project, just ask us. Most installations look fantastic with no maintenance at all beyond the occasional clean.
