Product description
Chestnut Fence Panel
Sweet Chestnut has been the rural fencing timber of choice in Ireland for centuries — naturally durable, naturally tannin-rich, and naturally suited to traditional and contemporary settings alike. Sourced from traditionally coppiced European forests and stocked in our yard for delivery across Ireland.
Why Chestnut?
Chestnut earns its reputation honestly. Durability Class 2 with a service life of 25 years and beyond, naturally resistant to rot and insect attack with no chemical treatment required. Lower tannin content than oak means less staining of fixings, while the warm honey-brown tones and subtle grain figure suit both restoration projects and contemporary architecture. Coppicing is one of the most sustainable forestry practices in existence — Chestnut is a timber that genuinely earns its environmental credentials alongside its performance.
Installation guidance
Chestnut is straightforward to install for any competent contractor. Stainless-steel fixings are recommended outdoors. Some surface checking is normal as it weathers and adds to the timber’s character.
Finishing & maintenance
You have two good options with Chestnut, and there’s no wrong answer. The natural route — leaving the timber untreated to silver to a soft grey — is the lowest-effort path forward and very common in rural settings. The preserved route — keeping the warm honey tone — takes a little more attention but rewards you with a finish that holds its character. If you choose to oil, use a hardwood oil designed for European species (we stock the right ones — ask us if you’re unsure which to pair with your timber). Apply within the first few months of installation and refresh every two or three years.
