Product description
Spruce Cladding Board
Spruce is the softwood that takes whatever you ask of it — paint, stain, oil, varnish — and finishes cleaner than just about anything else. It’s the standard species for kiln-dried structural carcassing across Europe and the natural choice when a project needs a consistent, even, pale base ready to take a coloured finish. Boards arrive in a clean cream tone with subtle grain. Sourced from sustainably managed European forests and stocked in our yard for delivery across Ireland.
Why Spruce?
Spruce earns its place by being predictable. With a density of around 470 kg/m³, it’s lightweight, easy to work, and machines cleanly to a smooth finish that holds paint, stain, and oil with very little prep. Durability Class 4 means outdoor use needs proper treatment, but for indoor work, painted exterior cladding, and structural applications protected by finishes, spruce is unmatched for value and consistency. The pale, even tone gives a neutral starting point that suits any colour scheme — which is why it’s the timber of choice for projects where the finish, not the timber itself, is the design feature.
Installation guidance
Spruce is the most forgiving timber we stock for a non-specialist installer. Use stainless-steel or hot-dip galvanised fixings outdoors; the timber is soft enough that pre-drilling is rarely needed except near board ends. Spruce takes paint, stain, and oil with minimal preparation — just brush down any dust before applying the first coat.
Finishing & maintenance
Spruce performs best when protected, and the good news is it accepts almost any finish you’d want to use. We recommend a quality paint, stain, or oil applied within the first few months of installation outdoors, then refreshed every two or three years. We stock the products that pair best with spruce — ask us if you’re unsure which to specify. Indoor spruce in a stable environment needs essentially no maintenance.
