Product description
Massaranduba Decking Board
Massaranduba is what you specify when you want hardwood decking that genuinely lasts a generation. Sometimes called Brazilian Redwood, Massaranduba is one of the densest hardwoods commercially available — denser than Yellow Balau, harder than Iroko, and rated Durability Class 1 with a service life of 25 years and beyond. Fresh boards arrive in a deep, rich red-brown that matures into a sophisticated silver-grey if left untreated, the kind of patina you see on architect-designed decks that have been quietly aging for years without complaint. Sourced from sustainably managed South American forests and stocked in our yard for delivery across Ireland.
Why Massaranduba?
Massaranduba earns its reputation honestly. With a density of around 1,100 kg/m³ and a Janka hardness comparable to Ipé, it’s one of the toughest decking timbers on the market — naturally resistant to rot, insects, and fungal decay, and capable of carrying foot traffic and furniture for decades without showing fatigue. The fine, even grain and rich colour give finished decks a quality that cheaper hardwoods can’t match, and the dense surface naturally sheds water without becoming slippery. Massaranduba is the species specified for high-traffic commercial decks, hospitality projects, and demanding residential installations where the deck has to look sharp and perform flawlessly year after year.
Installation guidance
Massaranduba rewards a careful installer — the density that makes the timber so durable also makes it unforgiving of shortcuts. Pre-drilling is essential at every fixing point — force-fixing this timber simply isn’t an option. Use stainless-steel A2 or A4 screws only; mild steel and galvanised fasteners will react with the natural tannins and stain the surface. Boards are heavy, so factor that into your lifting plan and ensure your substructure is sized for the load. Initial bleeding of natural pigments is common in the first few weeks of installation — rinse off any runoff onto adjacent surfaces and the bleeding will stop once the timber has fully weathered.
Finishing & maintenance
You have two good options with Massaranduba, and there’s no wrong answer. The natural route — leaving the timber untreated to silver gradually over twelve months — is the lowest-effort path forward, and the patina suits contemporary projects beautifully. The preserved route — keeping that rich red-brown colour for years on end — takes a little more attention but rewards you with a deck that holds its drama indefinitely. If you choose to oil, use a hardwood oil specifically formulated for dense tropical timbers (we stock the right ones — ask us if you’re unsure which to pair with your boards). Apply within the first few months of installation and refresh annually. Periodic sweeping is usually all the deck needs to stay looking sharp.
